The Holy Qur’an is the central religious text of Islam and the final revelation from Allah (God) to humanity. It was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over a period of 23 years and serves as a complete guide for life. For Muslims, the Qur’an is not just a book—it is the literal word of Allah, preserved without change since its revelation.
What Is the Qur’an?
The word “Qur’an” means “recitation.” It was revealed in the Arabic language through the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) between 610 CE and 632 CE in Makkah and Madinah.
The Qur’an contains:
Guidance for personal and social life
Laws and moral principles
Stories of previous prophets
Lessons about faith, patience, justice, and mercy
Information about the Day of Judgment and the Hereafter
It consists of 114 chapters (Surahs) and over 6,000 verses (Ayahs).
How Was the Qur’an Revealed?
The first revelation came in the Cave of Hira near Makkah when Angel Jibreel commanded the Prophet:
“Read in the name of your Lord who created…” (Surah Al-‘Alaq 96:1)
Revelation continued gradually over 23 years. This gradual revelation helped:
Strengthen the faith of early Muslims
Provide guidance during specific events
Make memorization easier
The Prophet (PBUH) memorized the verses and recited them to his companions, who also memorized and wrote them down.
Preservation of the Qur’an
One of the unique features of the Qur’an is its preservation.
1. Memorization (Hifz)
Many companions memorized the entire Qur’an during the Prophet’s lifetime. This tradition continues today. Millions of Muslims worldwide have memorized the entire Qur’an by heart.
2. Written Compilation
During the Prophet’s life, verses were written on:
Parchment
Leather
Bones
Palm leaves
After the Prophet’s death, the first Caliph, Abu Bakr (RA), ordered the collection of the Qur’an into one book because many memorizers were martyred in battle.
Later, during the Caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan (RA), copies were standardized and distributed to different regions to prevent differences in recitation. These copies are known as the Uthmanic Mushaf, and today’s Qur’an matches that original compilation.
Muslims believe Allah Himself promised its protection:
“Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder (Qur’an), and indeed, We will be its guardian.” (Qur’an 15:9)
Main Teachings of the Qur’an
The Qur’an teaches:
1. Tawheed (Oneness of Allah)
Belief that Allah is One, without partners or equals.
2. Prophethood
Belief in all prophets from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all).
3. The Hereafter
Belief in accountability, Paradise (Jannah), and Hell (Jahannam).
4. Moral Conduct
The Qur’an promotes:
Honesty
Kindness
Justice
Patience
Charity
What Every Muslim Should Know About the Qur’an
Every Muslim should:
Read it regularly – even if only a few verses daily.
Understand its meaning – through translation and tafsir (explanation).
Apply its teachings – in daily life.
Respect and handle it properly – with cleanliness and care.
Teach it to others – especially children.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”
Why the Qur’an Is Important Today
In a world full of confusion and moral challenges, the Qur’an provides:
Spiritual peace
Clear guidance
Moral direction
Hope and purpose
It is not limited to one time or place. Its message is universal and relevant for all humanity.
Conclusion
The Holy Qur’an is the final and preserved message from Allah. Its history shows careful preservation, both through memorization and written compilation. For Muslims, it is a complete guide for life, faith, and success in this world and the Hereafter.
Every Muslim should strive to build a strong connection with the Qur’an—by reading it, understanding it, and living according to its teachings.
